Lateral Epicondylalgia, more commonly known as Tennis Elbow, is a common issue where there is irritation of the soft tissue on the outside of the elbow. Typically, symptoms arise due to sharp increases in volume with a repetitive movement or more chronic issues that go unchecked. Lateral elbow pain can often be debilitating where simple tasks including turning a door knob or holding a drinking glass become painful.
Traditionally, the medical model prescribes treating this condition with ice, rest, and NSAIDs. Often, physical therapy may be suggested and, if no relief, an injection may be prescribed.
As we have spoke on in previous posts, there is usually more to the picture than just the pain. When we assess the symptoms, we often find associated neck and shoulder dysfunction that should be addressed as well. Here are three simple but helpful exercises for help relieving lateral elbow pain symptoms.
To assess the effectiveness of these exercises, do a simple pre and post test. With your palm facing down, try lifting your middle finger and then press down on the finger with your other hand, but resist against the pressure. Note the amount of pain present then perform all of the exercises in the video. Once complete, perform another test and see if a noticeable change was made creating less pain in the elbow.
