With spring coming and the weather getting nicer outside, a lot of people are beginning to go outside for a run. Whether you are a novice or elite runner, there is a good chance you understand the importance and benefits of things like proper footwear, a dynamic warm up, and cross training. Often times people will focus on all the details in running like stretching their legs and stride length/frequency, but I’m here to tell you there is one specific piece you may be missing…Thoracic Mobility.
There are 12 vertebrae in the middle of your back that make up the thoracic spine and their primary role is mobility of the spine. The reason thoracic mobility, specifically rotation and extension, is so important is because of the effect they have on all other regions of the body.
Lack of adequate thoracic mobility can lead to numerous issues such as: low back pain, neck pain, decreased rib expansion during breathing, and poor running economy or efficiency. Even if you currently have no pain when running, work on these three simple mobility exercises and see if you notice improvements with performance when you go out for your next run!
