Frequently Asked Questions About Physical Therapy in Sioux Falls
How long does physical therapy take?
Treatment duration varies based on your condition, goals, and how your body responds to care. Some clients see significant improvement in just a few visits, while others with chronic conditions may benefit from longer-term treatment. During your initial evaluation, we’ll provide a realistic timeline based on your specific situation.
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist in Sioux Falls?
South Dakota has direct access laws, which means you can see a physical therapist without a physician referral for most conditions. We’re happy to coordinate with your doctor when appropriate, but you can schedule directly with us to get started.
What should I wear to physical therapy?
Wear comfortable, athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. We recommend workout clothes similar to what you’d wear to the gym. This helps us assess your movement and guide you through exercises effectively.
Does physical therapy hurt?
Our goal is to reduce pain, not cause it. While some techniques like dry needling or deep tissue work may cause brief discomfort, we always work within your tolerance and adjust our approach based on your feedback. Many clients actually find the manual therapy techniques we use to be immediately relieving.

While we don’t bill insurance directly, we can assist you in submitting a Superbill to your insurance company for potential reimbursement, though this depends on your individual plan and out-of-network benefits. What if I feel too much pain during a session?
If at any time during your physical therapy session you experience increased pain, it’s important to let your therapist know so they can adjust the intensity or technique as necessary. At Empower U, we know soreness is safe. Most of our clients feel muscle soreness for 48 to 72 hours after the session but then see improved mobility, flexibility and relief from their injury. Your therapist will work with you to make sure that treatment is comfortable and effective for you.
How will I know when I no longer need physical therapy?
Your physical therapist should be able to provide guidance on when it is appropriate to stop attending physical therapy sessions based on your progress, goals, and overall health status. It’s important to listen to your therapist and continue with treatment until they feel you are ready to move on. As performance physical therapists, we specialize in not only helping you get out of pain but learn how to move better, train for your wellness goals and achieve them. We have a variety of clients that have become “Empower U Clients for Life” as they love how they feel after a treatment session and strive to move as optimally as they can!
