In its most simplified definition, CrossFit is constantly varied, high-intensity functional movements. While the benefits of CrossFit are many, it does not come without its fair share of physical challenges. CrossFit paired with physical therapy is something that cannot be overlooked as one begins (or looks to extend) their fitness journey!
CrossFit is known for its ability to train and improve cardiovascular endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. It is a diverse and intense training program that includes many facets. However, the intensity of CrossFit can lead to injuries or exacerbate pre-existing conditions if not performed under the right circumstances. This is why guidance of a physical therapist is essential!
Physical therapy is a vital component in the world of CrossFit. We are trained to assess, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries of all varieties. While many clients seek treatment initially as a reactionary response to an ache or pain, a proactive approach is preferred within the community of CrossFit. While multiple research studies have proven both the safety and effectiveness of CrossFit, it only aids the debate for CrossFit to work in conjunction with a physical therapist familiar with the environment and structure surrounding this community.
For many, CrossFit can be an exhilarating fitness experience which can help to transform one’s physical & mental health. For individuals who have been a part of the community for any extended amount of time they have likely experienced some sort of injury which has prevented unrestricted or pain-free participation. Being a physical therapist, it is our job to ensure others’ safety, prevent injuries when possible, and ultimately enhance an individual’s performance. CrossFit paired with physical therapy is a powerful combination that can help achieve fitness goals while maintaining a healthy body through proactive training. So, for those CrossFit enthusiasts, don’t overlook or undervalue the role a physical therapist can play in your personal fitness journey!
